Chicago’s Bike to Work Week – June 13-19

Around here every week is bike-to-work week, but Chicago’s official festivities start today, led by the Active Transportation Alliance. A variety of bike commuter stations will be set up along different routes. Two celebrations book-end the week: a bike away from work party on Monday and the Mayor’s rally on Friday. For those new to city cycling, Chicago or both, the city has lots of helpful information here.

Team Dottie/Oma and Melissa/Smurfette (and Mr. Dottie/un-named male bike) are ready!

I’ll be eager to report how successful the week is, measured by my completely non-scientific opinion of the increase in cyclists. How are you celebrating Chicago’s bike to work week? If your city (as Nashville and most others) had its bike to work week already, how did it go?

That’s My Story, and I’m Sticking To It

I said farewell to winter in We Biked the Whole Winter. I considered waiting until March 20, the official first day of spring, but the sustained spring-like weather and decent 15-day forecast convinced me that it was time to move forward.

I agree!

I agree!

I stand behind this decision. Okay, yesterday was 18 degrees with (allegedly, although I did not feel it) a windchill of 0. I overdressed and was sweating half-way to work. The sunshine was strong and everything was bright and beautiful. That’s springtime, folks! And, yes, currently the news says it’s 15 degrees, but I imagine it will be like yesterday, so I’m not worried. And every day from now on in the forecast is in the 50’s. So I’ll throw on my two gloves, long undies, scarf, and boots today, but I’m not giving spring up! Who’s with me? ;)

A Week of Cycling

Lakefront Trail Plowed

Lakefront Trail Plowed

In response to my question whether decisions not to ride were supported by reasons or excuses, the Village Scribe said that the answer lies in what you do the next day and the day after that and so on. I like that! This week I biked to work all 5 days, plus a 6th day to the theatre. So missing a week of riding due to extreme cold and traveling out of town for work does not make me any less of a “cyclist,” whatever that means. Cylicing is always my first choice when circumstances permit. That’s enough for me.

Hitting the road

Even though I didn’t ride my bike, the past few days were full of bike-related activities. I met Elisa and Anna of Bike Skirt for coffee in Birmingham, and we hatched a plot to ride the Chief Ladiga/Silver Comet trail with them sometime this spring. Can’t wait!  I am very close to finalizing my plans to buy a brand new bike, a Batavus Entrada Spirit, when I go to England in April. My friend Jennie generously gave me her old bike rack, so I can transport Pinkie without having to take down the top on my convertible. And I filled up the tires on the Dahon and practiced folding it to get ready for the first day of my commuting pledge week.

This will be my coldest ride yet. I am trying to think of it as an adventure and remember Dottie biking to work under much chillier conditions. :)
