365 Days of Batavus 04/20/10

April 18 marked the one-year anniversary of the day I met the Bat in Littlehampton, England. Dottie was with me for the first ride, of course!

The bike made it to U.S. shores in early May of 2009, courtesy of my lovely parents (story here). Since then, we’ve enjoyed all four seasons together, as shown in the photos below.

One year in, I still think the Bat was the best bicycle bargain ever. My fellow Americans, the pound is pretty low again these days. It might be time to start trolling the clearance sections of your favorite British bicycle shops and contemplating a summer vacation. :)

    Thanks for blogging about your Batavus! It can be a bit lonely being the only Dutch bike shop in LA, but I hope that in a few years we’ll have established a different kind of shop around transportation cyclists such as yourself.

    Batavus makes amazing bicycles and yours is quite lovely! We cannot seem to keep our “Bats” in stock for very long as Calgarians are beginning to finally appreciate the style and functionality of these amazing bikes!

    The Batavus Personal Delivery is sort of a (rich) cousin, to my Torker Cargo T.

    Advantages, upright riding position, so you can see and be seen easily, and ride comfortably, without keeping your neck/back bent, and it is a remarkably stable, comfortable ride. The bicycle lasts just about forever, the equipment is specced to last for 40 years or so. It comes equipped for a commuter/utility/transport ride from the factory, with fenders, lights, racks and all that.

    Its an exceptionally graceful bike, so it makes you happy as you ride. And really, what more could you ask for?
