Nashville Goes Green 06/25/09

Last week, Nashville Mayor Karl Dean announced a “Going Green” initiative for our city. Dean ran on an environmental platform and has said he’s committed to making Nashville the “greenest city in the Southeast”—so far, he’s done a decent job of getting money and resources dedicated to improving the city’s infrastructure and public transportation. I clicked on the link and was a little disappointed to find that most of the things he wanted us to commit to do were things I’d learned in third grade during the good old “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” campaign. News flash: Don’t run the water while brushing your teeth!

If you live in Nashville and haven’t signed already, what’s stopping you? Anyone else seeing similar initiatives in your city? I know the South is a bit behind when it comes to the green bandwagon.

    The environmental saying burned into my memory as a child was “Don’t be a litterbug – put it in the trash.” Seems NC public schools were a bit behind the curve.

    I have lived the three “R’s” for many, many years (child of the 60′s-70′s) Unfortunately much of it was lost along the way. So perhaps we do need to go back to the basics…like not letting the water run while brushing our teeth, and perhaps planning and planting items for yards that don’t require massive amounts of watering. Many of the changes are small and simple things that if EVERYbody did them would make a huge impact.

    Green is the word, lately. Thomas Friedman(I think it was him) was in town this week and said that things(Cars, buildings, ways of living, etc.) will truely be Green, when nobody calls them Green. Because their Greeness will be the norm. But Nashville and a lot of other places are still in 3rd grade. They can’t jump grades. But they had better hurry, because the climate isn’t waiting for them to catch up.
