Women in Technology

Obvious alert: LGRAB has a new look. What do you think? Dot & I have been working on this one in fits and starts all year, and there’s likely to be a few more tweaks to come, but we’re pretty happy with our take on the Suffusion theme.

Super cute! I love the clean look.

  2. Carolyn I. says:

I like it too, very clean.

  3. kristin says:

Man, I totally liked the old look! :-( Your beautiful photos were much bigger! BUT, this does have a cleaner look on the main page. I just like big photos.

  4. Samantha says:

Nice work! I really like the look- very clean. I like your tweaking of the logo as well.. something new but still the same. I like your “bike blogs” listing page too.. been toying with that idea. Even though yours is a long list, it looks nice. Great job!

  5. since your photos are so beautiful i liked the white space that complimented them. but this is so much more easier to navigate by topic. well done.

  6. trina says:

oh it all looks great! and couldn’t have come at a better time for me, i was just this week searching around for a good theme for WP (i’m moving my blog over) and was just about to buy an ok similar one for $40. But that one you linked to is waaaay more fitting for what i was looking for, has more options, and free! So thanks for the unexpected help. :D

    • Trisha says:

Thanks Trina! I was excited to find this theme, too. They have a forum that is really helpful if you run into problems, so that’s another plus. We’re still playing with the magazine layout options, which is how we want to display our category archives eventually.

  7. Looks good, and easy to navigate.

  8. Dottie says:

NOTE: This redesign is 99.999% Trisha’s hard work and creativity and .001% my saying, “Looks great!” (Does that add up? Math, like web design, is not my strength.)

The photos are as big as always, but you have to click on each post individually to see them. Maybe we should change it so the full posts show on the front page? Either way, this theme actually gives us the ability to make our photos a bit bigger in the future, which is one of the many things I love about it.

Thanks for the feedback! Keep it coming. :)

Yes please, more front-page stuff. I usually read through the RSS (which is GREAT, by the way, don’t change a thing) but I came back from computer-free holidays today and went to the site to catch up; I thought it was sad that it wasn’t fuller, picturier and flowerier.

    • Simply Bike says:

Looks great but the one thing I liked better before was being able to scroll down the page and see the full posts (rather than having to click on them individually to expand).

      Great work, Trisha!

    • Amy says:

I have to agree on the full posts. To my eye, when a site show partial posts I’m more apt to start reading the first post, and then notice the next post down and start reading what is available for that and miss going back to click on the post that I started on. But other than that I think the new look is nice! Like others have said, very clean.

  9. Dottie says:

For anyone interested in looking WAY back in LGRAB history, check out our very first design that we used for our first year, before Trisha redesigned it to the most recent theme.

  10. dwainedibbly says:

Frankly, I don’t care for the fact that your wonderful photos are not visible from the front page. Don’t hide them behind a click! Other than that, I like it. Please bring back the photos!

  11. Luke says:

I’ve been following this blog for a month or two and I’ve been very impressed with it. I check it almost daily, and I’m always happy to see a new post.

While the new design is very nice – and on most blogs would be an improvement – I really liked the visual simplicity of the former design. I don’t think you should ditch all your hard work, but maybe you could change the style of this latest revision to be a little more similar to the design it replaced.

The only other suggestion I have is making a larger chink of each article visible from the main page.

Keep up the great work! :)

Speaking as a web designer, I like this much better :)

Speaking as a reader … it’s impossible to separate that from someone who also runs a site. Having the excerpt on the front page, with a featured image, is GREAT. If someone doesn’t like a post, they don’t read more. If they do, they do :)

    Nicely done, keep pedaling!

  13. Stephen says:

I like it. I read your blog on my Android phone sometimes (when an interesting tweet is posted). What software do you use for the smartphone version of your site? I’m interested because I’ve created a local government website for existing bicycle facilities (lanes, paths, routes, etc.), and I want to create a smartphone version eventually. I’m a planner, not a programmer, and creating smartphone-friendly websites is a mystery to me.

    • Trisha says:

Stephen — we just use a WP plugin that optimizes the layout for smartphones. It is called “WPTouch.” Glad to know it looks as clean on Android as it does on iOS. With a site that displays maps, etc., you might have to tweak it some but it would be worth trying if you’re WP based.

  14. Trisha says:

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! We really appreciate it. I have adjusted the main page so that it shows two full posts instead of just one, and made the excerpts a bit longer.

  15. SleDog says:

no likey – my work internet filter blocks the newly designed site

  16. Ingemar says:

Great choice of color in the title/logo. I also like the simplicity and subtle curved corners. The only thing that I think sort of takes away from the design are the ugly social media links in the sidebar. Otherwise great job!

  17. Miss Sarah says:

Just in time for spring! Well did.

    S*

  18. Sue says:

I like the new layout and it’s very well organized; especially nice when searching for a topic. Looks great on all my gadgets that I use to peruse :). I did not notice a major difference in the photos: still looks great to me, and I can click on the photo if I want to view the loveliness in greater detail if needed.

  19. Lauren says:

I’ll be honest. I like the old layout better. This one looks business-y. Maybe a nice little drawing of bike at the top would help to lighten it up?

  20. Maureen says:

It’s crisp and clean. I do miss the photos though…I love the photos!

  21. Hmm I just tried to post a comment, but don’t see it. Have you guys turned moderation on? Let me try it again. Testing…

    • Odd, it worked the second time. What I wrote in my initial missing comment is essentially the same as what others: Love the organisation, but seeing entire posts with full pics will make it even nicer. Great job!

      • Trisha says:

Ha. I’m having a comment problem on your blog right now! I was fascinated by your account of the training ride and wanted to say so. Glad you like the new look overall!

        • It’s not just my blog it’s stupid fricking Blogger! Everyone’s comment and editing system has been down on blogger for half the night last night and for the second half of today. I might need to switch systems : (

          • Trisha says:

Bummer. My day job’s site was taken down during the EC2 outage a couple of weeks ago, so I know how frustrating technical issues you can’t do anything about are. I guess no system is perfect, but in the year we were on WordPress there were no outages — if you do end up switching.

            • David from Portugal says:

“but the one thing I liked better before was being able to scroll down the page and see the full posts ”

              I concur.
I think the previous design with the text and images on the front page, rather than this style, was much, much better, cleaner, clearer….and cutter!
Mrs.Dottie: some time ago, the beautiful photos you posted were much larger and detailed. Why are they smaller now?

              P.S. LOVE YOUR BLOG

I just saw the 5/13 “Bicycle Favoritism” post and now everything looks great to me.
